Approval Process for Advertising on Public Roads

To advertise on any public road or place, certain approvals are required. The process varies depending on the type of road. Here’s a breakdown of the requirements:

1. Council Approval

  • All advertising visible from any public road or place must receive prior approval from the local Council.

2. SANRAL Approval (for National Roads)

  • If the advertising is visible from a national road, additional approval from the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) is necessary.

3. Provincial Roads Approval

  • When advertising is visible from a provincial road, approval from the Provincial Roads authority is also required.

Application Process

If your desired advertising site complies with the Council’s bylaws, you must follow these steps:

  1. Submit an application to the Council.

  2. Include an engineer’s drawing/letter and various other relevant documents.

  3. Be prepared to pay a non-refundable application fee.

  4. After approval, you will need to pay subsequent approval and monthly rental fees.

Your municipality can provide you with all the necessary documents, information, and cost details.
